Hawaiian Pizza’s Canadian Origin

Ironically, the pizza named “Hawaiian” has no ties to Hawaii whatsoever. This pizza variety was conceived in Canada in the 1960s by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant. However, this doesn’t mean Hawaiians lack their local twist on this beloved dish.

Known as “Kalua pork pizza,” this Hawaiian variation features succulent barbecued pork pieces, pepper jack cheese, hoisin sauce, jalapenos, and a sprinkle of coriander. Naturally, the exact recipe and toppings can vary from one pizzeria to another, with some incorporating a unique blend of herbs to infuse their pizzas with distinctive flavors.
