In Hawaii, a longstanding tradition dictates that one must remove all forms of footwear before entering another person’s home. While this custom may strike outsiders as peculiar, it is as commonplace as laughter or smiles to the locals in Hawaii.
Interestingly, this practice was introduced to Hawaii by the Japanese when they initially established plantations in the region. Over time, it gained widespread acceptance and became an integral part of Hawaiian culture. It also serves as a subtle indicator of whether guests are present in the house; the more pairs of shoes left outside, the merrier the gathering inside!
