Two Official State Sports in Hawaii
Hawaii proudly claims not one, but two official state sports. The first one is likely an easy guess – surfing. The second, a bit less known but equally significant, is outrigger canoe paddling.
Surfing was granted the status of Hawaii’s official individual sport in 1998, while outrigger canoe paddling was designated as the official team sport in 1986. Remarkably, outrigger canoes have a history dating back to around 200 AD in Hawaii, underscoring the deep-rooted heritage of this sport in the islands.
