Humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa: Hawaii’s Official State Fish

The humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa, pronounced as “who-moo-who-moo-noo-noo-koo-ah-ooo ah-ah,” was designated as Hawaii’s official state fish in 1984. Interestingly, this designation became indefinite in 2006 as no re-election was pursued.

Many Hawaiians find humor because the fish’s name is longer than the fish, which typically measures about 10 inches long. The name translates to “triggerfish with a pig’s snout,” adding a touch of local charm to Hawaii’s unique cultural heritage.
