Contrasting Urban and Rural Landscapes

The capital city of Pyongyang may convey a semblance of modernity with its well-paved roads and contemporary buildings. However, this veneer of modernity is not representative of the entire country, which predominantly retains its rural character.

While the capital’s roadways boast smooth pavement, the nation’s highway system often comprises unpaved roads. A mere 3% of the country’s roads feature well-constructed asphalt surfaces. This stark discrepancy between urban and rural infrastructure underscores the distinct realities experienced within North Korea.
