From the 1950s through the 1980s, “going steady” was a term used to describe exclusive dating, often accompanied by exchanging promise rings. It’s no wonder that Blue didn’t know what it meant, as 6th grade is a bit young for a lifelong commitment.

Still, I bet that boy was crushed by her response. It probably took him a week or two to gather the courage to ask her, and in one fell swoop, his hopes were dashed. Perhaps he should have stuck around and suggested going skating instead. Maybe she would have heard “dating,” and they could have been back on track!
