The Boston Accent Strikes Again
Oddly, the manager wanted to know if AgentPat had pierced ears. Even without the thick Boston accent, I would have been confused. This incident made me curious about one of the thickest accents in America and its origins.
As it turns out, the Boston accent has roots dating back to the 17th century, according to linguistic researcher Ben Zimmer. The first settlers in America played a significant role in its development. There has been extensive research on the Boston accent, with studies showing that people often get distracted by its sound and miss the actual words being spoken (as exemplified in the story above).
