As true to life as the Little House books are, they are not strictly autobiographical. Laura knew how to make her stories more effective by changing elements of her life, adding some details, and taking out others.

Wilder’s autobiographical works and letters are highly informative for a more accurate look at her life. However, the Little House books are a great start, and they certainly always feel real, even if some parts here and there are not exactly how they happened.
