A Peculiar Dining Habit
Despite common misconceptions, the Greeks did not solely recline during meals. This tradition commenced in the 7th century B.C. and was subsequently embraced by the Romans.
Reclining while eating was seen as a symbol of power and status in Greek society, but it was reserved for men. Women were generally excluded from banquets, and on the rare occasions when they were allowed to attend, they were expected to sit upright while eating.
