The Greeks Embraced Disorder
Ancient Greeks did not prioritize tidiness or the adage that cleanliness is next to godliness. They preferred to keep their living spaces rather untidy, with the walls of their homes often darkened by the constant soot and smoke produced while cooking meat.
Horner’s poem even mentions how the soot tarnished the weapons displayed on the walls of the average Greek household. In summary, it was common for Greek homes to have darkened walls due to these conditions.
